Setsplay Singles Championship 2009

Bill Tory from Warnambool's City Memorial Bowls Club is the 2009 Ararat Motor Group Setsplay Singles Champion for 2009 after defeating Bob Frka from Ballarat's Victoria Bowls Club in an epic five set final on Sunday afternoon.

In a classic grand final it was Frka who dominated early in the match with some devastating drives and brilliant draw shots. Frka won the first two sets and looked on the cusp of becoming the 2009 title holder. Tory however displayed his renowed calm and gradually fought his way back into the match by applying consist pressure with his accurate draw bowling. As the match wore on Tory came to the fore and it was Frka who physically tired and eventually missed some critical drives at important moments. Tory won this memorable final 5-7, 6-7, 7-3, 7-1, 7-4.

To reach the final Tory overcame host club member and the 2009 'dark horse' in Brendan Kaczynski in straight sets in the first of the semi finals. Kaczynski, who had a brilliant championship, never settled into a rythm with Tory winning in straight sets.

In the other semi final Frka faced Sebastopol champion Robert Baker and this match proved plenty of excitment for those spectators who braved the bracing conditions. Frka won the first set before Baker hit back to win the second, sending the match into a third and deciding set. Frka gained the early upper hand but Baker wasn't to be denied and was holding several shots before Frka unleashed another of his withering drives to sink the kitty with his final bowl and take out the contest.

In accepting the $1000 prize money and custom crafted wooden pen set, Tory thanked the Ararat Motor Group for sponsoring one of Victoria's premier singles events and the Ararat Bowls Club for once again running a sucessful championship. He also congratulated Frka for his championship performance
